The Hypertherm Summer Institute is an exciting Internship program for current high school students age 16 or older interested in a career in advanced manufacturing. Please read below for more information and to apply!



Hypertherm is a world leader in industrial cutting solutions and manufactures the vast majority of its products right here in Hanover and Lebanon, NH. Hypertherm has been growing and hiring a wide variety of advanced manufacturing positions for many years. In the next 3 years, Hypertherm anticipates adding new Machine Operators, Technicians, Engineers, Leadership roles, and a wide variety of other positions.

Hypertherm, a 100% employee owned business, recognizes that the success of their business is directly tied to the people who work and who will work for Hypertherm in the future. There are many stereotypes about manufacturing, and many are not accurate. In an effort to dispel these myths, Hypertherm would like to demonstrate that manufacturing is a viable and lasting career choice by providing the next generation with a firsthand experience in advanced manufacturing.

To this end, Hypertherm is announcing the 4th year offering their Summer Institute for high school juniors and seniors through the Hypertherm Summer Institute. The program provides an opportunity for students to learn about advanced manufacturing while simultaneously getting paid, entering an apprenticeship, and potentially earning college credits.

Afterwards you will be contacted to attend a student information session (parents also invited) that will be hosted at Hypertherm to provide parents and students more information about the program. If you complete the information below, you will receive an invitation. The information session will allow students and their parents to tour the facility; speak with instructors, leaders, manufacturing staff; and explore career opportunities in the field. Following the information session, the recruitment process will continue with formal interviews after which 10 interns will be selected.

Classes begin on June 25th 2018 and will run for four weeks, stop for one week of unpaid vacation, and then continue for another four more weeks. Students will be enrolled in a U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeship when entering the program.

In the mornings, students will learn the foundational concepts of advanced machining and metal cutting through a combination of bookwork, group discussions, and hands-on projects. Students will have daily homework assignments to complete as they progress through the program. Morning classes will wrap up with a final project where they will be challenged to apply all of their new skills to produce a final project and a machined part that would be presented to parents and peers.

The afternoons will be spent job shadowing a variety of different positions throughout Hypertherm's facilities in Lebanon and Hanover, NH. Interns will shadow and perform supervised work in various positions on the manufacturing floor which could include lean manufacturing processes involved in machining, assembly, inspection, and testing. Additionally, they may shadow positions such as programming and engineering. All students will be provided time to rotate through each location throughout the 8-week program.

Successful completion of the Hypertherm Summer Institute coursework may result in college credits through a local/regional college.

  • Blueprint Reading with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
